In 1955 James E. Hickman, already a CPA, left his employer and formed a partnership with John Powell, beginning his first company. This would be the first of the six forms the company would take over its more than 50-year history.
Four years after its inception, Ralph Hickman joined the company as a second generation of Hickman accountants. Hickman Powell & Company served Knox County until 1960, when Mr. Hickman and Mr. Powell parted ways. Mr Hickman plied the waters of the federal tax system successfully for ten years as James E. Hickman, CPA.
In 1970 Mr. Hickman partnered with three former IRS agents to create Hickman, Huff, Rogers, & Pugh. It was during this partnership that the business expanded to add a Sevierville office (1972) and a Gatlinburg office (1975).
In 1976 Mr. Hickman and Mr. Pugh separated from the other partners and continued as Hickman Pugh & Company. The company maintained the three offices – Knoxville, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg – until Mr. Hickman’s “retirement” in 1981.
Being an individual who did not like to be idle, Mr. Hickman returned to work in late 1981, forming Hickman & Company, P.C. Mr. Hickman continued to work until the Friday before his death in 2001.
At that time the next generation took over the business. Mr. Hickman’s daughter, Lee Anne Hickman Bowden, CPA, took over the Gatlinburg office, and Ralph Hickman took over the Sevierville office. The siblings continue to share the Knoxville office. In 2003, the Sevierville office was renamed Hickman & Associates, Inc.
Also in 2003, Jonathan Hickman joined Hickman & Associates, Inc. as the third generation of Hickmans to take up accounting. In 2004, Ralph’s daughter-in-law Carol joined the firm.
Hickman and Associates, Inc. continues to maintain its primary office in Sevierville, although appointments are available in Knoxville and other area cities. We hope to add another generation to our ranks very soon….
Three possiblities are seen here.
